Dr. Rigamonti received his MD degree from Universita` Cattolica in Rome, Italy.  He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and trained in neurovascular surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1987, Dr. Rigamonti moved to Baltimore at the University of Maryland where he became and became an associate professor of Neurosurgery. He joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 1993 as the Director of the Cerebrovascular Program.  Dr. Rigamonti directed the Hopkins Radiosurgery and Hydrocephalus programs for more than 10 years. In 2015 he became the Chief Medical Officer Officer at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH), a joint venture between Johns Hopkins Medicine and Saudi Aramco, a world leader in energy.  Dr. Rigamonti is currently the Chief Executive of JHAH.

Dr. Rigamonti’s vascular research clarified the genetics, the MRI appearance, and the natural history of cavernous malformations. His work on spinal epidural abscesses elucidated their epidemiology, microbiology, and outcome.  His work in Hydrocephalus and Pseudotumor Cerebri has impacted the diagnosis and surgical management of these conditions. In radiosurgery, he and his team analyzed the long-term outcome of radiosurgical management of benign and malignant brain tumors, and provided evidence leading to better treatment choices.  For the last several years Dr. Rigamonti has focused his interest on how to successfully tackle the healthcare challenges posed by chronic diseases with the goal of providing effective medical services at a cost that societies can sustain.
